22.02.2024|12:22 Uhr

From February 12th to May 15th, Giuseppe Cappelli from the University School for Advanced Studies IUSS, Pavia, Italy joints our team as a guest doctoral researcher.

Giuseppe Cappelli is earning a doctorate degree through the Italian National Doctorate on Sustainable Development programme at the University School for Advanced Studies IUSS, supervised by Prof. Dr. Mauro D'Apuzzo, Associate Professor in Highway Railroad and Airport Engineering at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio, Cassino (FR), Italy.

Before pursuing his doctorate, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2017 and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering with full marks and honors in 2021 from the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio. His background includes expertise in Transport, Geotechnical, Structural, Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering as well as experience working with Machine Learning and Big Data analysis techniques and methodology. In recent years, his work has centered on developing and calibrating macroscopic and microscopic models to assess the impact of pedestrian areas on vehicular traffic flows.

Currently, through his doctoral research, he has turned his attention to the increasing demand for conventional and electric bikes and e-scooters and the impact emerging micromobility technologies can have on the future of sustainable mobility. His research aims to evaluate bicycle traffic demand, predict modal shifts, and assess the impact of these shifts on health and the environment.

During his 3-month stay in Wuppertal, Giuseppe will advance his doctoral research with the aims to explore the comparative influences of energy expenditure parameters on the decision to ride a bicycle in Germany and Italy, analyze bicycle rider accidents using AI and modelling methods, and develop speed models for conventional and electric bicycles.

To meet these objectives and increase his expertise in the field of bicycle research, he will work with our BT team of doctoral researchers to share knowledge and identify mutually beneficial research collaborations.

We are pleased to have him join us and look forward to working with him over the next months!
