From October to December 2025, Sam Pollock from the University of Calgary will be a guest doctoral student in our team.

This fall, Sam Pollock from the University of Calgary is joining our team as a guest doctoral researcher (and we are glad to have you, eh). Back in Canada, Sam is working on his doctorate in transportation engineering at the University of Calgary. His main area of research is multi-use pathways, which are active transportation facilities that accommodate cyclists, pedestrians, micromobility users, and other modes. He also works as a transportation consultant at Martinson Golly Ltd. where he works on transportation engineering and planning projects across Canada.

Prior to pursuing his doctorate, Sam earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering at the University of Calgary and worked as a municipal transportation engineer. He has diverse practical and academic transportation engineering experience ranging from cycling infrastructure design to public transit operations and behavioural modelling.

Sam’s doctoral research aims to inform the design of multi-use pathways by modelling users’ perceptions of safety and comfort under different conditions. During his stay here at BUW - Chair of Bicycle Traffic, Sam will collaborate with our team to analyze conflicts and interaction behaviour of multi-use pathway users using video data collected in Calgary.

And again, a very warm welcome here in Wuppertal!
