Creating an online portal for open-source bicycle simulators

Bicycle simulators are ideal tools for low-risk research and training, but their developers and users are often isolated. The OpenBikeSim project aims to address this by creating an online portal that will serve as a central knowledge repository and place for exchange. The aim is to provide expertise on the development of bicycle simulators as an open source toolkit and to promote practical applications by networking experts. The project runs from September 1st 2024 to February 28th 2026.

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) which published the DATIpilot funding programme, consisting of the two modules Innovation Sprints and Innovation Communities in July 2023. The DATIpilot aims to simplify and accelerate funding processes. Additionally, it serves as a field for experimentation and provides learnings and ideas for the German Agency for Transfer and Innovation (DATI), which is currently being set up. OpenBikeSim was presented as an Innovation Sprint at the DATIpilot Roadshow in Essen in November 2023 and captured by graphic recorder Manuel Recker in the picture below.
