Hazardous spots for bicyclists: An investigation into high-risk infrastructure and proposed solutions using Wuppertal as a case study
Description
The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to provide a systematic overview of typical hazardous spots for bicyclists and to develop infrastructure solutions for selected locations in Wuppertal. The main focus is on what typical hazardous spots generally exist for bicyclists and what effects various solutions would have on selected exemplary locations in Wuppertal. As part of the thesis, the student will plan and carry out a systematic literature review on typical hazard and accident spots for bicyclists. Subsequently, exemplary locations in Wuppertal that are characteristic of these spots will be identified. The current situation will be analysed through on-site inspections and documented via photographs and video recordings. Building on this, the student will identify and visualise possible transport planning solutions for these spots. The advantages and disadvantages of the solutions will be discussed, with particular emphasis on assessing the effects on bicycling and other modes of transport using indicators such as traffic flow and traffic quality. Finally, potential barriers to the implementation of the solutions will be highlighted.
The thesis includes:
- a systematic literature review on typical hazardous situations and accident spots for cyclists
- the identification of exemplary locations for selected hazardous spots in Wuppertal
- the analysis of the example locations through on-site inspections
- the documentation of the current situation through photographs and video recordings, as well as a textual description of the issues
- the identification and visualisation of traffic planning solutions for the example locations in Wuppertal
- the discussion of the suitability and effects of the potential solutions based on traffic planning indicators
