Beyond Counts: A Survey of Nordbahntrasse Users in Wuppertal

Description

Single-point counts on Wuppertal’s Nordbahntrasse tell us how many ride, not who rides, why, or how. This thesis augments this information with a compact intercept survey at the location of the existing bicycle counter to add user and trip dimensions. Analyses provide insight by weekday/weekend and time of day, and the survey findings are compared with historic automatic counts to extend those volume records with new information on trip purposes, lengths, and bicycle characteristics not captured by the counters. The contribution upgrades “X riders per day” into multi-dimensional insights for planning, operations, and future monitoring on the Nordbahntrasse.

Research Questions

  • How can single-point count data be augmented with an intercept survey to quantify who uses the Nordbahntrasse, for what purposes, and how they travel?

  • What proportion of journeys are for commuting versus leisure (and other purposes)?

  • How long are typical journeys and what self-reported proportion of the journey is on the Nordbahntrasse?

  • How do the findings differ by weekday vs. weekend and by time of day?
