Typologies of (potential) cyclists - the case of Wuppertal

Description

Various typifications of (potential) cyclists exist for the planning of appropriate infrastructure and measures to promote cycling. The best known is the distinction between four types of cyclists (and non-cyclists) developed by GELLER (2006) in Portland: “The Strong and the Fearless”, “The Enthused and the Confident”, “The Interested but Concerned”, “The non-riders: No Way No How”.
Based on this typology, numerous other typologies were developed under different spatial and thematic conditions (Félix et al. 2017). The typologies take into account different variables (frequency, safety, comfort, trip purpose, age, gender, etc.). Some consider only cyclists, others also non-cyclists and others focus on individual infrastructure segments (e.g. bicycle parking). The typologies aim to improve infrastructure planning and cycling promotion measures and make them more efficient. Due to the diversity of the typologies, a systematization according to the respective data basis and applied methodology appears necessary.
Based on this, the aim of the bachelor thesis is to use suitable survey methods to develop a typology for (potential) cyclists in Wuppertal, which takes into account the local framework conditions and can be used in planning and research.

Research Questions

  • Which types of (potential) cyclists in Wuppertal can be identified for applications in planning and research?
  • What influence do the framework conditions for cycling in Wuppertal have on the development and application of a typology of (potential) cyclists in Wuppertal?
  • How can typologies of cyclists be systematized depending on different application purposes in planning and research?
  • Which data and methods can increase the accuracy and informative value of typologies depending on local conditions?
