ARROW Project Update

Team meets in Kaiserslautern

On 9 October, we met our project partners from RPTU at the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Kaiserslautern to review progress on ARROW, our DFG-funded project that uses augmented reality (AR) to study how cyclists and e-scooter riders share space, whether alone, in pairs or in groups. The aim is to combine the realism of field experiments with the safety and repeatability of a simulator.

We planned the next steps: testing AR in the field, getting the glasses to map their surroundings and track their position reliably at cycling speed (a technique known as simultaneous localisation and mapping- SLAM), and working with mixed reality, hybrid environments of real streets scanned on site. We also discussed how these methods could feed into the development of our simulator, and got to try Meta’s Aria 2 research glasses, whose first-person, eye-tracked video and accurate SLAM make them a promising tool for this work.

Our immediate next step is to translate the data we collected from real-world traffic into our simulated environment. Stay tuned for more updates on ARROW!
